Australia: Clashes Expected between New Regional Conservative Government and Workers

The bill outlaws virtually all strike action by workers covered by state awards. These awards are legally binding agreements between employers and unions made in arbitration courts which cover some 800,000 Victoria workers. Fines for breaking the law would be 50,000 Australian dollars for organizations (US$1 = about A$1.4) and $1,000 for individuals. The government intends to create a new arm of the existing magistrates' courts to enforce the new law. Workers in industries designated as "vital" will be completely prohibited from striking.
