Mark Curtis refused parole THERE have been some new developments in the case of Mark Curtis, the trade unionist and political activist from Des Moines, lowa, who was framed by police on rape and burglary charges in September 1988 and is currently serving a 25 year sentence in the John

Bennett state prison in Fort Madison, lowa (see IV

181At a November 20 hearing held at the prison, the state Board of Parole denied Curtis his release, stating that he had not served enough time. The board heard a statement from Curtis urging that he be released on the basis of the time he had already served in prison, his exemplary record as a prisoner, and the wide support he had received.

A week before the hearing, a delegation of 30 supporters of Curtis release met two members of the parole board, and presented them with more than 173 letters of support for Curtis from around the world Shortly before this, the campaign for Curtis release won an important victory when the Des Moines district court rejected an effort by the parents of the woman he was falsely accused of assaulting to gain access to the financial files and lists of contributors of the Mark Curtis Defence Committee, in an attempt to make the committee's funds available as part of a financial award from Curtis to his clients. District Judge Arthur Gamble said there was no evidence thai the assets of the committee are assets for Mark

Curtis available for recovery in damages" (information compiled from US Militant) * tails to the same address.
